Three or four cenotes in one day — each completely different. Open water you can see 30 meters down. Hidden cave systems only free-divers enter. Underground rivers with no tourists at all. I know which to visit and in what order so you miss every crowd.
What you'll see
Four types of cenote experience
Open cenote
Sky-open pools of turquoise water surrounded by jungle. Crystal clear, 20–30m visibility. The postcard — done properly, without 200 other tourists.
Semi-open cave
Sunlight breaks through a crack in the ceiling. You swim in filtered light that turns the water electric blue. These are the ones that make people cry.
Underground cave cenote
Headlamps on. You're swimming inside a cave system that formed 10,000 years ago. Stalactites above, fish below. Completely dark. Completely silent.
River cenote
A slow underground river. You float downstream through a cave. No swimming required — just drift and look up at the rock formations.
